Volunteer Experiences: Kerry

DIRT had the privilege of hosting Kerry Appleton as part of a team of six pediatric nurses for a week at the end of October. These women worked tirelessly all week long to provide the people of Port-au-Prince with the best care possible. Kerry shared with us this glimpse into her week:

"Global DIRT is an impressive organization! Their staff put an unforgettable experience together for our team of six pediatric nurses. I feel that we had a true immersion into the community and an incredible variety of experiences...all in one week! Our group participated in mobile clinics, did shift work at the hospital and ran a clinic at a safe house for rape victims. Being a pediatric intensive care nurse, I was surprised to learn that I enjoyed the mobile clinics more than the hospital work. It was exciting to step so far out of my comfort zone.
This was my first medical mission trip, but certainly not my last. I hope that Global DIRT and other small NGOs continue to receive enough funding to keep their missions alive. Haiti's problems are immense, but if individuals and groups keep coming to do their small part, Haiti will have a brighter future. I would love to have the opportunity to work with Global DIRT again!" - Kerry Appleton, RN
